You really need to play the other games to fully appreciate it though, specially FM1 and FM2. This Valentine's Day, Anne Lee picks out the cream of the otome game crop. It badly needs a remake / remaster though to fix loading times and other outdated UI stuff.įM5 is the most complete package and best game overall if you consider not only gameplay. I know people love FM3 here, but I think that's my least overall game in the main franchise.įM2 is my personal favorite in terms of gameplay, tone and level design. That all said, the NDS port is really well done, and having even cameos from FM5 is kinda crazy when you think about it.
The USN campaign is more interesting and better designed overall, but still suffers from the core gameplay deficiencies. The only remotely challenging level in the first playthrough is the Hell's Wall battle on the OCU side. Short type weapons + skills (Speed specially) completely trivializes it and make the already easy game an exercise in repetition. There's an argument to be made that it is actually the weakest main entry, due to the somewhat shallow gameplay / level design and the terrible balance.
